A Miranda House student recently revealed a horrific incident that happened to her on Tuesday evening. In a Facebook post, she wrote how while taking a bath in her PG room’s bathroom she noticed a camera lens attached to her through the washroom exhaust.

The girl, who is originally from Assam and is living in the capital city for the last three years, lives in a PG located at Hudson Lane of North Campus. She told SheThePeople.TV that after she realized that somebody was trying to record her through a camera she shouted out to her roommate.

“As soon as I shouted, I saw that the person on the other side had taken out the camera. There was no point running to check on the person as he had disappeared by then. But we immediately called the police and our landlady,” she said.

Her landlady had told her earlier that the mesh on the bathroom exhaust was completely opaque when the girl had inquired. But it was clearly not. Instead it opened to a busy street on the side facing the window.

When the girl told her landlady about the incident, she told us that the landlady in turn started blaming her purportedly for "creating nuisance in her PG."

“Why couldn’t you have sat and taken a bath? She said to me and kept asking me if I really wanted to report it to the police and that I should consult my father first before involving the cops in it. I told her I am 20 years old, I don’t need anybody’s permission to file a complaint,” the girl told us.

When the girl told her landlady about the incident, she told us that the landlady in turn started blaming her purportedly for "creating nuisance in her PG."

Initially, she was wary if there was any investigation going on in her case as on Wednesday, she did not get any update from the police. She went to the police station today where they informed her that the probe is on. They have found that there are one or two CCTV cameras in the locality but since they are a little far away from her house, it is difficult to see which way the offender ran.

She said that she posted about the incident in the online space only for the sake of awareness. “I don’t want it to get politicised but I do want people to know that this happens.”

This is not the first time something like this has happened to the DU student as she told how once in September last year somebody had come and jerked off on her doorstep.

The girl was also contemplating reporting about the incident in the cyber security department. She met Cyber security expert, Rakshit Tandon and explained her situation to him. For now he told her that until the person who recorded the video does not upload it anywhere in the online space, they can’t do anything but if something like this does happen that she can report to him.

This is not the first time something like this has happened to the DU student as she told how once in September last year somebody had come and jerked off on her doorstep. There are about 12 to 13 girls living in her PG and her landlady again tried to dismiss the incident by saying that they are stupid boys.

There are about 12 to 13 girls living in her PG and her landlady again tried to dismiss the incident by saying that they are stupid boys.

She says that though she is exhausted by all of this, she still feels secured as now she has told many people about it and they are reacting positively to her situation and not blaming her.

Talk about how the torch-bearers of modesty and culture say that girls should stay at home to feel secure, but here harassment has happened in the closed confines of her house. If even the house is not safe then this breaks the misconception that goes like women shouldn’t venture out in public spaces to avoid sexual crimes.
