Delhi Dalit Girl Rape Case Update: A Delhi court on Monday gave orders to send the priest and three others to three-day police custody. The four accused were arrested for the alleged rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl in the Delhi cantonment area.
The Additional sessions judge Ashutosh Kumar sent the accused persons to police custody after the police told the court that their investigation would need custodial interrogation. The police also said that a piece of new information in the case has come into their knowledge. The accused persons were presented in front of the judge via video conferencing.
The accused persons have been identified as a 55-year-old priest named Radhey Shyam and his three workers Salim, Laxmi Narayan and Kuldeep. According to the police, all the accused are known to the rape victim’s mother.
The Crime Branch of Delhi police filed an application in court asking for a five-day remand of the accused persons to confront them. The nine-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped and then cremated without the consent of her parents in a crematorium in the Old-Nangal area.
After the incident came to light, several villagers started protesting outside the crematorium asking for strict action against the priest and his associates. The police had filed a case against the four accused persons based on the statements by the deceased girl’s mother.
The four accused have been charged under section 376 (rape), section 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. In addition to that, the accused are also booked under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes act.
