Indian women cricketer and captain for the T20 format Harmanpreet Kaur is in the midst of a controversy. The police have claimed that during their verification they found her testimonials as incorrect. The Punjab Police have sent the proposal to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, which says that she cannot continue as a DSP due to lack of a genuine graduation degree. However, she can claim the position again when she qualifies and gets the required educational degree.

DGP (administration) MK Tiwari told TOI, “Harmanpreet had produced the graduation degree conferred on her purportedly by the Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut."

What happened?

The commandant of the Punjab Armed Police in Jalandhar had sent the degree to the University in Meerut for verification. To everybody's surprise the university revealed that the registration number does not exist.

Tiwari said that the case has been referred to the state government who will appoint a team to take further action.

Kaur was felicitated with the DSP rank seeing her exceptional achievements in cricket.

Why was she given the position?

Kaur's performance in the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017 gathered a lot of attention and praise. Post that, Captain Amarinder Singh offered her the post of a DSP. At that time, she was employed by the Western Railways on a five-year bond. Harmanpreet had tendered her resignation in 2017 but as Kaur was under a bond, she would have to give back the five years' salary if she left the job before completing her service term. She had only completed three years of service till then. Singh then took the matter to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal so that she could be a part of the Punjab Police.

However, now, if her educational qualifications do not fall in line with the list of rules laid down by the department, she might lose her post.

When contacted on her mobile, the Arjuna awardee said to TOI, “I don’t know who has told you this. Waise to aisa kuch ha nahi (There is nothing like this).” Asked when did she complete her graduation and in which subjects, and whether her degree was genuine, she refused to reply and said, “I can only talk to you after talking to my department.”

Not the first such case

Earlier this year in February, Mandeep Kaur, 2010-Commonwealth Games gold medallist and two-time Asian Games gold medalist in 4 x 400 m relay was also removed from the post of the DSP.

Mandeep Kaur had submitted her graduation degree which she had acquired from an institute recognised by the Sikkim University. The state police investigations later revealed that she had never been a student of that university.
