Congress MLAs Slam Priyanka’s Attire on Assam Tourism Calendar

After Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) rolled out its first calendar with state’s brand ambassador, Priyanka Chopra’s pictures on it, the Congress MLAs from the state have sparked a controversy over the actor’s choice of clothing in one of the pictures.

The alleged picture has Chopra wearing a yellow midi-dress with a deep neck design in the front. This has caused fury among Congress members Rupjyoti Kurmi, Roseline Tirkey and Nandita Das who want the dismissal of the Quantico actor from the position of Assam Tourism’s brand ambassador. They called her clothing ‘minimal’ and ‘immodest’ which is bringing a bad name to the state’s culture.

The government should preserve the respect of the Assamese society. Frock is not an Assamese attire and the calendar pictures were not sober at all.

They are also arguing as to why the actor wore a western attire while she should have worn Assam’s traditional outfit which is Mekhela Chador.

“The government should preserve the respect of the Assamese society. Frock is not an Assamese attire and the calendar pictures were not sober at all. The government should have known how to preserve the prestige of the Assamese society, instead, they could have used the traditional mekhela sador. This is the reason we have protested against the calendar,” Kurmi told the portal TIME8 as per a report in Deccan Chronicle.

The MLA added, “There are a lot of talented Assamese actors, the government should look into this and accordingly appoint one.”

But the ATDC officials don’t see the calendar in the same way. “The calendar's purpose is to promote Assam internationally. We have also sent it to prominent international tour operators and dignitaries," Jayanta Malla Baruah, Chairman of Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) told G Plus, a Guwahati-based weekly.

He further added, “Priyanka Chopra is an international figure. Her portrayal in the calendar has not diminished Assam’s culture in any way." He also asked if Priyanka Gandhi's picture should have been used instead of the actress'.

This controversy has awoken netizens who are now criticising Congress MLAs for their narrow-mindedness.
