“I never thought of motherhood as a reason to give up on my career that I worked so hard on,”  says Mini Mathur, TV host and actor.

The actor who currently stars in the sitcom  Mind the Malhotras, Mathur is as unapologetic as her character, while she talks about her experience with motherhood as a working mom.

“There is a cliché that goes around when you say, a happy mom is the best kind of mom…I truly believe that,” says Mathur as she talks about multitasking and how she manages things.

While sometimes it is hard for working moms to balance work and pregnancy, for Mini it was important that her body was ready to take the responsibility prior to getting back at work. “It was important for me to go back to work, as soon as my body was able to do that.”

Adjustments and Finding Balance

“I was shooting for Indian Idol 4 when I realized I was pregnant, I had to drop it because the Indian audience is not ready for a pregnant host.” She continues, “I felt like it was a setback, I was angry. But I enjoyed every minute of staying at home and making that a success.” It is important for mothers to give time to their body and their baby. “Work will come to you and you will eventually get back…I just recommend for mothers to not take too long a break.” She further adds, “There are mothers who jump back after 3 months, your body is not ready. You’ve worked hard enough; this is your time off”.

Even as times have changed, it is usually the women who bear the responsibility of caring for their children, even if they hold a job. From changing nappies to working in the office, women do everything.

What is Mini’s take on this?

“To an extent Indian men are spoilt, so we have to change that from this generation onwards. The way I raise my son is the same way as I raise my daughter..half the battle is won if you have your spouse giving you wind beneath your wings..things do happen but I have to admit I work extra hard.”

“I believe women should stop doing everything by themselves, ask your husband for help! You have to vocalize it, that too without guilt,” she further adds that she never differentiates between her children as, “you play with the kitchen set and you play with the doctor set. Today my son is a sushi chef; he loves the kitchen while my daughter is not interested”

Balancing between Guilt and Individuality

One major battle working women face is-guilt. They feel guilty of leaving their children home because of their work and there is always a sense of self-blaming.

I believe women should stop doing everything by themselves, ask your husband for help! You have to vocalize it, that too without guilt.

How does Mini Mathur deal with that?

“Guilt is something nobody can get away from. When your babies are small you are guilty that you are not there to watch out. When they are older you feel you should be talking to your kids, women can never get away with guilt.” She continues, “The way I have dealt with guilt is, I have compartmentalized my life. I know this is my time to work but when I get home it is my quality time with kids and nothing else.” However, she adds, “What women are achieving today, shattering glass ceilings…you have to do at a cost of something, “If you are giving quality at home, don’t worry about the quantity. Worry about yourself, think what women in the next 200 years are going to do. Unshackle yourself and keep aside the guilt. “I need to do this for me. I am important as well.”
