Meet Meghna Singh, Indian Cricketer Secures Her ticket to Australia Tour

Who is Meghna Singh
Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Meghna Singh is one of India's most notable female cricketers who made it to the Indian cricket squad for Australia tour. Reportedly, Singh's parents recognised their daughter's talent long back following which they went the extra mile for Singh's training against all odds.

Singh was selected to all formats in the women’s squad after her proven performance in the sport. All it took for Singh was a true passion and hard work to overcome all societal odds and taboos.

Who Is Meghna Singh?

  • Right from a young age, Singh started her rigorous training process while training hours started at 4 am. Her parents realised that their daughter was passionate about cricket and supported her through the training.
  • Reportedly, Singh used to travel 24 kilometres from Kasba Kotwali to Nehru Stadium, Bijnore in interior Uttar Pradesh with her father for cricket training. This routine was repeated in the evening as well.
  • The 27-year-old pacer is one of three uncapped players from India to be included in the squad for the tour of Australia touted to be held in September-October.
  • During her struggling years, Singh got a job in the Indian Railways which was apparently the only interruption in her 14-year cricket journey.
  • Singh is the second woman cricketer from Uttar Pradesh after spinner Poonam Yadav, to be selected for Indian team.
  • Singh's coach Lakshyaraj Tyagi said on Wednesday, "It’s the best opportunity for her to make her presence felt and stake a claim for a berth in the Indian team... She has the ability. I am sure she will come up with a good show in Australia."
  • The 27-year-old player's mother Reena Singh told Hindustan Times that Singh used to be the only girl playing with boys in the area and they always found her enjoying the game.

Singh is currently in the camp at Bengaluru and will fly to Australia on August 29 with the burden of high expectations on her shoulders.
