Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the former Associate Justice of Supreme Court of the United States was profoundly remembered by US Vice President Kamala Harris on her birthday. She tweeted a heartfelt note in her honour.

"Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was notorious for recognizing the women who came before her and fighting to pave the way for those to come after. Today, on her birthday, we honor her life and the legacy, and we recommit to fighting for equality and justice for all," Harris tweeted.

Here are a few things to know about Ruth Bader Ginsburg

  1. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was born on March 15, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York.
  2. When she was starting high school, her mother was diagnosed with cancer who then died a few days before her graduation ceremony.
  3. She then graduated in Arts from the Cornell University in 1954.
  4. Ruth was one of the nine woman in a class of 500 men who had enrolled at the Harvard Law School in 1956.
  5. Ruth found it really hard to find employment in the beginning of her career because of her gender.
  6. She then became a research associate and then the research director from 1961 to 1963 of the Columbia Law School Project on International Procedure.
  7. She faced discrimination as far as getting paid was concerned because of her gender. This was at the Rutgers Law School in 1963.
  8. It was in 1970 that she co-founded a law journal dedicated only to women's rights.
  9. Ruth Bader Ginsburg had earned the nickname 'notorious RBG' and was the longest serving female justice in the US history.
  10. During the 1970s, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a pioneering figure in gender-discrimination litigation.
  11. She appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington, D.C by Jimmy Carter in 1980.
  12. President Bill Clinton had nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1993. She became the second female, and the first Jewish woman to hold this position.
  13.  During her long career, Ruth Bader Ginsburg actively advocated women's rights such as right to abortion, condemned gender discrimination, stoop up for gay rights, etc.
  14. She succumbed to complications from pancreatic cancer on September 18, 2020, at age 87.
