US President Donald Trump will be announcing his new Supreme court nominee this Saturday. According to reports, Amy Coney Barrett has now emerged as the US President’s favourite to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg in American Supreme Court. If nominated, at 48, Amy Coney Barrett would be the youngest Supreme Court justice ever. She will also be a controversial appointment as Barrett’s views are considered conservative and there is fear she may be anti abortion or scale down the progress in the country’s abortion rights movement. Barrett’s appointment may come in stark contrast to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the justice best-known for fighting for women’s rights and equality.

Who Is Amy Coney Barrett?

After graduating summa cum laude (with the highest distinction) from Notre Dame Law School she spent two years as a judicial law clerk. According to the New York Times, Barrett is considered an “ideological heir” to former conservative judge Antonin Scalia, and some fellow clerks say she was his favourite.

She’s made her mark in law primarily as an academic at the University of Notre Dame, where she began teaching at age 30. She first donned judges’ robes in 2017 after Trump nominated her to the 7th Circuit.

What are her views on abortion?

  • There is speculation that Barrett is conservation and possibly anti abortion
  • Barrett is considered “a woman who brings the argument to the court that is potentially the contrary to the views of the sitting women justices,” according to Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List anti-abortion political group
  • Barrett is a practicing Roman Catholic and mother of seven

Why Amy Coney Barrett Became Donald Trump’s Favourite

After the meeting with Amy Coney Barrett, Trump seemed very enthusiastic about choosing her. He is reported to have said, “Barrett will be very well received by his people.” He said,” This pick is so important to not only my legacy but my re-election bid that she will effectively be my new running mate.”
