The trailer for Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Durgamati is out and at first look seems to be the Hindi horror-thriller film audiences deserve and have been waiting for. The Southern film industry in India is known for its superior horror genre cinema. Therefore Durgamati, directed by G Ashok as a remake of his own 2018 Telugu film Bhaagamathie, sees a welcome deviation from Bollywood’s banal horror tropes, promising a bone-chilling experience with the trailer alone. The film is set for a December 11 release on Amazon Prime Video.

Durgamati, earlier titled Durgavati, boasts of a stellar cast with Arshad Warsi, Mahie Gill, and Jisshu Sengupta alongside Pednekar, faces renowned for their acting chops and meriting far more screen space than they currently occupy in films. Given the pandemic, the film will, at present, not see a theatrical release, and only be available for OTT viewing worldwide.

About The Plot

Durgamati, unlike most of its Hindi horror counterparts, isn’t a film solely reliant on jump scares and a weak plot. With a gripping storyline that moves through the world of crime, corruption, an abandoned haveli, and history, the trailer manages to make audiences think. Pednekar, as IAS Chanchal Chauhan, is identified as the one gambit that inspector Nidhi Verma (Gill) can use to bring down the allegedly corrupt politician Ishwar Prasad (Warsi). The plan requires Chanchal to shift into an old haveli, where the past wreaks havoc and the horror begins to unfold.

Bhumi Pednekar, on headlining a film without another star in the lead, was quoted saying, “It is the first time that I am helming a film alone and it is exciting as well as nerve-wrecking. There is a lot of responsibility on me. I have been very fortunate as an artiste and I’m proud of my journey in cinema so far. So, I’m grateful for this opportunity.”

Durgamati And The Horror Genre

Backed by actor Akshay Kumar as a producer, Durgamati trumps his latest release Laxmii in every manner, despite belonging to the same tray of supernatural themes. Pednekar (reprising the role played by Anushka Shetty in the original film), as an IAS officer-turned-vengeful spirit, thrills in a spookier, more tasteful, and far more believable way than Kumar could as a transgender ghost.

Going by the trailer Durgamati instead stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of the 2007 film Bhool Bhulaiyaa, 2018’s Stree, and the most recent Bulbbul, all three of which focused on delivering a woman’s vengeful spirit the justice it duly sought.
