A Glimpse Into Bhaag Beanie Bhaag

At the very onset, viewers are introduced to the eponymous Beanie Bhatnagar aka Bindiya Akankshi Bhatnagar, played by Bhasker, on a stage. The trailer then goes on to reveal the events that have led to this moment: an apprehensively accepted marriage proposal, followed by Beanie inevitably deserting her pending nuptials to chase her life-long dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Tongue-tied during her first attempt at stand-up comedy, Beanie even has to face a male audience member yelling, “Go back to your shaadi.”

As Beanie finds herself at a crossroads, she is spurred on by her friend, essayed by Dolly Singh and a fellow stand-up comedian, played by Ravi Patel, with whom Beanie shares a real “will-they-wont-they vibe”. Facing an ultimatum from her deserted groom-to-be, her family’s doubt on whether she is all that funny, and rigid societal norms, it’ll be interesting to see what Beanie actually ends up running away from – her dreams or her doubts.

Old Wine In New Bottle?

As the only other fictional series centred around an against-the-odds female comedian that I’ve watched is Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I couldn’t help but be reminded of it while watching the trailer for Bhaag Beanie Bhaag. Additionally, the trope of women being conflicted between marriage and ambition has been explored one too many times in my opinion. In one of Bhasker’s own movies, Veere Di Wedding, the character played by Kareena Kapoor says yes to her long-term boyfriend’s marriage proposal, gets horrified when faced with everything that a conventional marriage entails, and eventually calls off the wedding for a brief period. That said, Beanie’s dream itself deserves props for exploring the still unconventional profession of stand-up comedy for Indian women.

From a less critical point of view, it must be highlighted that Beanie’s struggles will hit close to home for a lot of Indian women who face a daily tug-of-war between leading a cookie-cutter life and writing their own destinies. A special shout out to Girish Kulkarni, who plays Beanie’s clueless yet affable Indian father to perfection and utters some of the funniest lines in the trailer. However, the hilarious Dolly Singh remains grossly underused in the trailer with hardly a punchline to her credit. Swara Bhasker promises to own Beanie’s character and effuses it with various aspects of her real-life personality. Does she succeed? We will have to watch the Netflix series to know for sure. All in all, the trailer manages to pique one’s interest enough to stream the show next month and accompany Beanie as she endeavours to live life on her own terms.
