Bail Plea Of Rhea Chakraborty, Brother Showik Rejected In Drugs Prob
The bail plea of actor Rhea Chakraborty was rejected by a Mumbai sessions court today, September 11. Chakraborty, along with her brother Showik had been arrested during the drug probe in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case. Chakraborty, who was arrested on Tuesday by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was remanded to 14-day judicial custody. She was lodged into Byculla Jail. She was charged with allegedly procuring drugs for her former boyfriend Rajput, who died on June 14. The bail plea of her brother Showik Chakraborty was rejected as well.
Following the rejection of bail plea, Satish Maneshinde, Chakraborty’s lawyer, was quoted by ANI as saying, “Once we get the order copy. We will decide next week on the course of action on approaching the High Court.”
Life Is At Risk In Custody: Rhea said in her bail plea
Chakraborty’s earlier bail plea was also rejected by a Mumbai magistrate court, following which she had faced arrest, and was to remain in jail till September 22. Showik, meanwhile, who was arrested last Friday along with others including Rajput’s house manager Samuel Miranda and cook Dipesh Sawant, was to remain in jail till September 23.
NDTV reports that in her bail plea, Chakraborty had “retracted her confession” to the NCB and said she was “coerced into making self-incriminatory confessions.” She also reportedly said that “her life is at risk in judicial custody,” and “she had received rape and death threats.”
Mumbai Mirror also states, “Her bail application said no drugs or psychotropic substance have been seized from her and the allegations, if any, would pertain strictly to smaller quantities.”
Bollywood celebs ask for Rhea’s release
Chakraborty, who was arrested under various sections of The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, has claimed that she procured marijuana for Rajput, who was a regular user. On the arrest, her lawyer had said, “This is a travesty of justice, with three central agencies hounding a single woman just because she was in love with a drug addict, (who) was suffering from mental health issues for several years…”
Several Bollywood stars have come out in support of Chakraborty, with her friends Shibani Dandekar and Saqib Saleem demanding her release. Saleem, Chakraborty’s co-star from Mere Dad Ki Maruti, posted an image of Chakraborty on Instagram with the hashtags justiceforrhea, releaserhea and justiceforsushant.
Yesterday, Dandekar and Rajput’s former partner Ankita Lokhande got into a Twitter spat after the latter shared a statement accusing Chakraborty of allowing Rajput to consume drugs. Reacting to the letter, now shared widely on all social platforms, Dandekar tagged Lokhande as a “princess of patriarchy” and alleged that the TV actress has played a “major role in this ‘witch-hunt’.” Read more about it here.
