It was earlier reported that several streaming services had approached the makers of the film to acquire streaming rights the film. However, it was Netflix which was eventually finalized for the carrying out the task. Bhumi Pednekar took to Instagram to share the announcement. Posting a photo of herself with co-star Konkona, Pednekar wrote, “Watch Dolly and Kitty fight their silent battles while they navigate womanhood, sisterhood, love and everything in between in this charming story about finding freedom. Can’t wait to shine with you my chamakta sitara.”

What We Know

Bhumi Pednekar and Konkona Sen Sharma will play the role of two cousins around whom the film will revolve. They play the characters of Dolly and Kajal, and the duo share a secret between them. The film will be set in the outskirts of New Delhi. Vikrant Massey too will be seen in a rather pivotal role.

The film, which was also a part of the opening gala of the 2020 UK Asian Film Festival, was lauded for integrating key issues within its narrative, from female empowerment, defying the patriarchy and interfaith relationships to challenging gender conformity and the trappings of capitalist society, where human beings are commodified and evaluated by app star-ratings.”

Both Konkona Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar are well-known for playing revolutionary roles in different films over the years. In the 40-odd films she’s acted in in her career, Konkona has played diverse characters, ranging from a conservative south Indian wife, an entertainment journalist, a young woman with mental issues to a mother accused of murder. At the same time, she brings credibility to all the roles she plays. On the other hand, Bhumi Pednekar has carved her name in the Indian film industry with her talent. From movies dealing with lookism and fat-shaming, to the ones talking about erectile dysfunction, she has essayed quite some ground-breaking roles in Bollywood.

As for director Alankrita Shrivastava, she has previously received widespread accolades for her work Lipstick Under My Burkha. The film caused quite an uproar as it dealt with the tabooed subject of female sexual desire. Konkona was a part of this venture as well. Recently, Shrivastava also wrote and directed the Amazon Prime web-series Made in Heaven.

It's no wonder then that the announcement of the release of this film is causing quite the stir. With such powerful women in the team, the expectations from Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is immense. But whether it’ll live up to those expectations, only time will tell.
