Harmanpreet Kaur

Following the controversy over cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur’s "fake degree", the Punjab government has reportedly withdrawn its job offer to join as deputy superintendent of police. The state government's probe and police verification reportedly confirmed that the graduation degree of India’s T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur is fake.

According to The Times of India, the Punjab government's decision came after the probe. The Punjab government, however, says that she ‘can be retained only as a constable’.

It is an embarrassing encounter for the all-rounder as she was set to join Punjab police as a Deputy Superintendent of Police on March 1. But before she could join, the degree issue flared up. If reports are to be believed, she, too, was unaware that the degree she collected from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, is fake.

Reacting to the report, Harmanpreet Kaur's manager told ANI, "We have not received any official letter from Punjab police regarding the termination of her job. This is the same degree which she submitted in the Railways. How it can be fake and forged?"

“She told us that her coach got her admission in the university, saying it was flexible about exams. She has told us she was given the degree but had no inkling that it was fake. The CM has almost decided that we appoint her as constable, a post matching with her educational qualification of senior secondary and elevate her as DSP as and when she fulfills her educational requirement,” said a senior functionary of the Punjab government.

“We cannot relax the rules for her. She will have to fulfill the educational qualifications. A DSP has to be a graduate.”

“She is a player of international repute and was given DSP rank on the basis of her achievements in the field of cricket,” the officer reasoned.

Kaur reportedly got the railways job three years ago under the sports quota. And she had signed a five-year bond

However, she was relieved from her railways job earlier in 2018 after she put in a request to join Punjab Police.

The 28-year-old was offered the DSP’s post in Punjab Police in July last year. She is now set to join Punjab Police as a constable.

When TOI reached out to her, Harmanpreet responded, “I am not well and taking rest. Will tell you later.”

Currently, the cricketer is busy teaming up with Lancashire Thunder mates for the 2018 season of England’s Kia Super League . She is leaving for Britain on July 15.
