A producer, actor, director and social activist in the arena of combating and ending violence towards women and girls, named one of the 10 Most Powerful Women in India by L’Officiel magazine, a recipient of the prestigious Karmaveer Puraskar Award, one of Femina Magazine ‘s 50 most powerful women in India in 2007, Mahaboo Mody-Kotwal is perhaps best known for her work on The Vagina Monologues .

She has used her production house and theatrical work and her foundation The Make-A-Difference Foundation to raise awareness and funds to combat violence against women and girls working with NGOs and individuals all across India. Her film performances include The LettersInkaarShirin FarhadLittle ZizouBlackGuzaarishBuddha Mar Gaya  and Sixth Happiness. On television, she has been part of Bollywood HeroBatliwalla House Number 43. Mahabanoo’s stage credits include: Shirley ValentineA Romance For RubySteel MagnoliasBlithe Spirit, (Two) Hot To Handle! Other roles include the BBC radio’s acclaimed adaptation of Vikram Seth's A Suitable Boy and Salman Rushdie’s The Moor’s Last Sigh. As a director and producer, Mahabanoo has given India some of its most memorable plays in the past 15 years: ArtShirley Valentine(W)Hole in the HeadOnce I Was Young . . . But Now I'm Wonderful, (Two) Hot To Handle!Lift Kara De, The Vagina Monologues and its Hindi translation Kissa Yoni Ka. She became one of India's first stand-up artists and first female stand-up artist in the mid-1990s and has performed all over India and in London, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

We will chat with Mahabanoo about her incredible journey on stage, celluloid and her work on gender violence.
