Karumathampatti, a small suburb of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu may soon have it's very own all-woman police station ( AWPS). The district at present has three AWPS out of the total 37 police stations, and the rural police have now forwarded a proposal to the state government to open a fourth in Karumathampatti.

There are five sub-divisions under Coimbatore rural police - Periyanaickenpalayam, Perur, Pollachi, Valparai and Karumathampatti. Of 37 police stations in the district, only three AWPS (Thudiyalur, Perur and Pollachi) deal with women only cases like harassment, rape and suicide of women within seven years of their marriage. Sources have told TOI that the nearest station accessible to women in Karumathampatti is Thudiyalur, which is around 30 km away. As such, going that distance to lodge complaints can be a daunting task. Furthermore, the women investigative officers are also forced to travel same. Similar situation occurs for Sulur residents when they travel to Podanur AWPS. It is to get rid of all these inconveniences that the rural police have proposed this new initiative to the state government to set up the police station.

"We have sent the proposal to the state government. After getting approval, work will begin. It would help litigants as they won't have to travel far to lodge their complaints," said RV Ramya Bharati, superintendent of police, Coimbatore district, reported by TOI.

Likewise, women from Valparai travel to the Pollachi AWPS to lodge their complaints which is difficult to do as the road is hilly  and during night hours travelling is pretty risky business for women. The residents of Valparai have also requested the state government for an all woman police station in their area.  However, action still needs to be taken on those.
