Women’s Safety is India’s priority number one and rightly so. Our society that was once forgiving towards the rapists and shamed raped victims, is drastically changing. This can easily be seen in the number of sexual assault reports that are being filed in the cities, since crimes of such nature went mostly unreported previously.

Keeping this in mind, the government of India has allocated an addition Rs.1000 crore to the Nirbhaya Fund. "The government is committed to safety and security of women, and another Rs.1, 000 crore has been allocated to the Nirbhaya Fund," said the Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley while presenting the Union budget.

The Fund was set up by the Congress led UPA government for the empowerment, safety and security of women and girl child, after the horrific gangrape of 23 year old girl in the capital of the country in 2013. It was also intended towards supporting all initiatives by the government and NGOs working for protection and empowerment of women.

According to a report by One India, the National Crime Records Bureau shows a steep increase in the number of crimes against women, which has impelled the finance and women and child development ministry to introduce more programmes and also increase the allocation of funds. Just this week, the Rail Budget was announced, and women’s safety in the trains was declared a priority. The Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu also said that with the help of the Nirbhaya Fund the ministry will take concrete steps in ensuring better security measures for women.

This massive issue that is holding back half the population of the country from effectively helping in development of the economy needs the government’s undivided attention and steps like these will hopefully help us achieve that soon.
