A woman who believes in inclusiveness, from the Tibetan community, Tenzin Chodon is an executive trainer, presenter, writer and cross-cultural communication coach who deals with individuals, institutions, recruitment agencies and academies, helping them with educating, mentoring and strategising their professional success within the respective industries. Why did I choose entrepreneurship?

I imbue my belief in rendering absolute focus and time to bring about innovation in my industry through unconventional ways of communication-coaching. I also want to impact and uplift the Tibetan community, especially women, to take up entrepreneurship. Most importantly, I chose this field because I yearn to be a self-reliant and independent woman.

Goals

My priority aims are to expand my online clientele internationally, to collaborate with new organisations/companies from different industries, build a business portfolio and to invest in building a robust social media presence.

My biggest challenge in this journey:

1. Lack of clarity:  As the industry of communication is broad, it was difficult to settle with one specialisation and niche. Deviation in the target audience was a repetitive challenge.

2. Lack of human force: As a solopreneur, I have always been responsible for my own everyday structure and functioning which in turn caused difficulty in the management of time and prioritization of various tasks that are essential to the business.

3. Severe competition: Communication training was being offered in a plethora of different online portals, in addition to various academies, that already had a monopoly in the business.

Advantage of starting small:

I believe that "small is beautiful" and it allowed me to take gradual steps in expanding my business without haste and heavy risks.

Managing the pandemic:

Pandemic has hit us all, and I am managing this hurdle by:-

  1. Staying active in building my social media presence, attracting audiences, and converting them into potential clients.
  2.  Using available resources, such as personal and professional network/contacts to reach out to possible clients.
  3. Providing free webinars to create traction.

Piece of advice to all budding small business owners:

1) Master brand storytelling:  Irrespective of the business size, storytelling is always imperative. Let your audience know why you started this. What is the story behind your small/big brand/business? You can strike an emotional chord that piques the interest of your niche.
Fragmentation of your business purpose and authenticity can be caused due to poor storytelling.
2) Have a " Plan B" : Often times, new entrepreneurs fall into the dogma of acing the very first time with the very first plan of action. Businesses are all about experimentation. Not all plans that are executed, work. Not all products or services launched are meant to work.
Therefore, follow the law of conservatism and always have a "Plan B" for such scenarios. Know how to re-execute something when it fails. Seek multiple and innovative ways to resolve issues.
3) Be aware of the changes in your market: As small business owners, staying updated and informed of what is happening in your own market makes a difference. From pricing to positioning, from collaborating to launching, before taking any significant step, it is important to reconsider your knowledge of the existing socio-economic status of the market you belong to.
