As many as 45,000 people had signed an online petition asking UN Secretary General Ban-ki-moon to reconsider the decision. Even employees of the UN protested against the appointment, on the day it happened.

"Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent ‘warrior’ woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit,” the petition read.

Social media had a mixed response. While some were relieved by the decision, others were upset that the decision was premised on what the character is wearing, instead of what she represents.

So what do you think? Does Wonder Woman convey the wrong message, or is she in fact a symbol for gender equality?
