Why So Merry, Mary Kom?

Because the good news kept dropping in like the infamous cloudbursts in Mawsynram,  for five-time world champion, an Olympic medalist and the current Asian Games gold medalist, Mary Kom. This powerbank, who is the face of North East India, and of Indian Sports too, is now set to revel in some international hullabaloo about her excellence.

US president Barack Obama, who centered his speech on the pegs of the need for women empowerment, instinctively mentioned Mary Kom’s exemplary performance as a reference point for other women aspirants. “Every Indian should celebrate the success of Shah Rukh Khan, Mary Kom, Milkha Singh equally, not by the colour of skin, or worship,” he said.”

"I am thankful to him for mentioning my name. He acknowledged my performances over the years. It was surprising because he could have taken anybody's name. It is one of my happiest moments — I am really proud to be an Indian," said an elated Kom.

"If I meet him ever, I will definitely thank him because it is very encouraging," she added, hardly being able to contain her happiness.

The international attention didn’t stop there. She was also accepted the offer to be the Thai Kick Boxing ambassador, as they plan to bring the sport to India. “It is great to be honored as a brand ambassador for Thai boxing.  At a time when crime against women is increasing, we can learn Thai boxing for self-defense too,” she said.

It is a great honor for me, especially from one country to another,” she told The Hindu, at the event organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in New Delhi yesterday.

And her entire state back home in Manipur only mirrored her euphoria, for she is putting so many things on the map, this one woman army: woman power, north eastern talent, boxing, and the idea that it is never too late to chase your dreams- as she kisses success as a mother… the list is endless, just like the extent of this day’s significance in her life.
