Varnika Kundu was stalked in Chandigarh by a politician’s son. She spoke up and with the support of her family, narrated the entire incident on social media. Vikas Barala, 23, and his friend, charged with stalking and drink driving, were out on bail within hours of their arrest in Chandigarh. Varnika has declared an all out war against this behaviour and believes things could have been much worse had it not been for her presence of mind. The strong woman in her 20s, has the country’s women rallying for her.

“Nobody cares that a man has female friends, drinks or is out beyond sunset alone”

“It is none of his business, it is my business and my family’s what I do and where…”

“If it wasn’t for men like these, I wouldn’t be unsafe going out… whether it was 12 am or 2 am or 4 am.”

“If it happens at night it’s my fault? Can the men not control their urges at night? Why am I being questioned?  I am the one who was under attack…but they are not questioned…”

“It is a well-established tactic to intimidate me so that I back off…But what would have been the case if those guys had caught me?”

“A mistake doesn’t last that long, can’t be so intense? A mistake can’t go on for kilometres…They are apologizing because I saved myself. If I hadn’t been saved, who would they have apologised to?”

“My family knew where I was. The society should have asked the accused what they were doing at midnight. Why the society did not question them. Girls are unsafe because of such people”

“The things they’re choosing to try & shame me, men can do openly in India standing in the middle of a road”

“I’m lucky, it seems, to not be the daughter of a common man, because what chance would they have against such VIPs?”
