The number of buses that fall under the Delhi government is 7,379 buses, with a total of 15,000 drivers, according to reports. All the 13 women hired went through extensive training under the Delhi government's 'Mission Parivartan' initiative. With this induction, the total number has increased to 34, making Delhi one of the first states to have this count of female bus drivers.

The thirteen bus drivers hired hail from different parts of the country, with one of them also being a national weight lifter as per the announcement. The Mission aims at training women who wish to acquire heavy motor vehicle (HMV) licences. The programme is presently offering training to the fourth batch of candidates.

Why induction of female bus drivers in public transport matter?

It will always be a win to see more women going out there doing everything that was once considered a prohibited zone for them, and enabling them to enter the majorly male-dominated heavy machinery driving space is a sure shot way to ensure we are giving them an equal opportunity.

Why is it integral to have female bus drivers in the capital? Well, why not? The derailment with respect to women's safety in Delhi around public transport, especially buses, indicates the urgency of having a more female-friendly environment where women can trust the modes of transport they travel in. Inducting female drivers will ensure that buses become considerably less threatening than they are now given the horrendous incidents that occurred in the past decade.

Not just buses, seeing women driving autos and taxis, too, will expand employment opportunities for women and help make roads safer than they are now, and women drivers at the helm of it are capable of doing that. Women bus drivers are unquestionably going to inspire young girls to break stereotypes and expand horizons that were once limited to what women could or could not do.
