At a Mahila Town Hall organised in Ahmedabad on Saturday, she said that the party has "given four women chief ministers and four women Governors."

"Rivals call BJP an anti-women party but it gave four women chief ministers and four women Governors," said Swaraj, TOI reported.

She also said the party had six women ministers in the current Union Cabinet including two in the powerful Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). Swaraj pointed that previously (under other governments), "no woman was ever a member of the CCS.”

She took the example of her own appointment as the External Affairs Minister in 2014 and then went on to talk about the induction of Nirmala Sitharaman as the Defence Minister earlier this year.

She claimed that the party is progressive in political empowerment of women.

"The party is making every effort to resolve issues related to women's safety, empowerment and self-reliance," she said.

Earlier, Gandhi fired against BJP and questioned against its ideological group RSS. He asked if anyone ever saw women at an RSS 'shakha' meeting wearing shorts, also the group's trademark khaki uniform.

To this, Swaraj responded at the Mahila Town hall saying, “"It's unbecoming of politicians to speak like this.”

"Had Rahul Gandhi asked why women are not allowed to wear shorts in the RSS, I would have definitely responded. But given the inappropriate language he used, I do not think this question deserves an answer," she added.

But the story isn't over yet. A few hours after Swaraj’s comments, Congress returned in kind with this comment. “The Congress Party doesn't live in a time capsule where Congresswomen's dress codes must be decided by the organisation's idea of appropriateness. Women in the Congress serve on the front lines and not on the cheerleading benches.”

We will have to wait and watch who fires the next comment.
