Suits Star Meghan Markle Visits India
Suits star Meghan Markle was in India for a week as part of an information and charity tour by World Vision Canada promoting young women’s health and hygiene. She was spotted at Mumbai airport and was photographed with henna.
The reportage has been positive and a welcome change from the earlier media coverage when news of her ‘royal relationship’ with Prince Harry broke.
Meghan spent time in the slums of Mumbai with a Duke University student and founder of NGO Myna Mahila Foundation, Suhani Jalota and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr Jockin Arputham, founder of the National Slum Dwellers Federation. The actor visited Delhi last week, to learn more about issues faced by women and young girls who live in slum areas. While on her trip, she engaged in conversations around education, hygiene, empowerment, economic development and health care.
The trip was in association with World Vision Canada’s “Rise Up! Daughters of India” initiative, which focuses on solutions to eradicate gender discrimination and the issues of 63 million teenage girls in the country who don’t have access to proper toilet facilities.
The actress also met several NGO leaders, and Shamina Shafiq, a former member of the National Commission for Women, as reported by Daily Mail. “Meghan had been planning this [for the past eight months], compiling her own research and helping set the agenda for the trip. She didn’t want to be given notes by someone else and just show up. These are important areas of interest for Meghan and cover issues she feels extremely passionate about.” a source from the World Vision Global Ambassador’s mission told US Weekly.
This is not the first initiative Meghan is a part of as she spearheaded an initiative to help bring clean water to communities in Africa and went to Rwanda to meet local schoolchildren in 2016. The late Princess Diana was also an ambassador of World Vision during her lifetime.
