A Noble Service Rendered

Mary Kom, known for her spirit and remarkable achievements in the boxing arena, expressed her deep sense of honour in serving her nation in any capacity possible. However, the weight of personal obligations has led her to relinquish the role of chef-de-mission for the Paris Olympics. Despite her disappointment at not being able to fulfil this commitment, Mary Kom remains steadfast in her support for the Indian contingent and their endeavours at the Games.

PT Usha, acknowledging Mary Kom's decision, conveyed her understanding and respect for the boxing legend's request. She emphasized the importance of respecting Mary Kom's privacy during this time and assured her of support from both herself and the IOA. Usha further stated that consultations would be held to identify a suitable replacement for Mary Kom, ensuring the smooth functioning of the Indian contingent at the Olympics.

The Importance of the Chef-de-Mission Role

The role of Chef-de-Mission holds paramount significance within the framework of any national contingent participating in international multi-disciplinary events like the Olympics. As the primary administrative figure, the Chef-de-Mission shoulders the responsibility of overseeing the athletes'  well-being and acts as the liaison between the contingent and various organizing committees.

Embracing Change

With Mary Kom's resignation, the IOA has appointed Shiva Keshavan, a six-time Winter Olympian and accomplished luger, as the deputy chef-de-mission. Additionally, the esteemed table tennis player and Commonwealth Games champion, Sharath Kamal, has been chosen as India's male flag-bearer. The IOA plans to announce the female flag-bearer at a later date, as several quota spots for the Games remain unfilled.

As India prepares to participate in the upcoming Olympics, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement among athletes and fans alike. The focus now shifts to finding a suitable replacement for Mary Kom and ensuring that the country's contingent is well-prepared to compete on the world stage.
