Here's a quick guide to public holidays in 2017, and how to maximise those long weekends:

1. FYI, in the 12 months, we could have 9 (3-day or more) long weekends and some even having it twice a month, all thanks to the festivals in India.

2. Take that long-planned trip to someplace comparatively hot in January. May be Rajasthan?

Republic Day (Jan 26) falls on Thursday, which means if you take Friday off, then yayyy… you have 4-day long weekend. But plan something large huh!

4. If we start with February, MahaShivaratri (Feb 24) is on Friday. Bingo! Take leave on Saturday and take a short hill station trip nearby.

5. We were all sad that we couldn’t enjoy Holi properly last year. No worries! In 2017, Holi (Mar 13) will be extra colourful because it falls on Monday. Take Saturday off and thus you have a perfect weekend planned. Again Ugadi / Gudi Padwa (Mar 28) is on Tuesday. So plan accordingly, because if you take Monday off then you will have a straight 4-day treat.

6. The month of April is a real treat. I’m sure most of us don’t celebrate Ram Navami (Apr 5) which falls on Tuesday. The summer season will already be upon us, so by taking a Monday off that week, you can party in a cold place such as Manali. Then again, 13th is Vaisakhi and 14th is Good Friday that fall on Thursday and Friday respectively. A long weekend? We think so…!

7. May Day (1st) falls on Monday. BOOM! Another weekend gateway…

8. Ramzan Eid (June 26) is on Monday and the dry weather those days will surely give you the reason to visit the north.

9. How about a Leh-Ladakh bike trip in August? Say hello to the happiest month of the year. Aug 14 has Janmashtami, which is a Monday, then Independence Day (Aug 15) and Parsi New Year on 17th, Thursday. Take leave on the remaining work days – Wednesday and Friday. What more do you want? It’s a weeklong celebration. Again, Ganesh Chaturthi is on 25th, which is a Friday. Enjoy!!

10. Welcome the festive month October. September 30 is Dussehra, which falls on Saturday and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2) is on Monday. Let’s have a fun weekend, shall we? But that’s not it! Again, Dhanteras (Oct 16) falls on Monday, Diwali (Oct 18) on Wednesday, Bhai Dooj (Oct 20) on Friday. Take rest of the days leave and plan for a longer trip, you can actually have the whole week in your pocket.
