As women empowerment remains high on the central government’s agenda; state governments are taking serious initiatives to do their bit in advancing the status of women in the society as well. One such step is being taken by the Madhya Pradesh government, who will now be issuing Ration cards to the eldest woman of every family, instead of a male member.

This decision was taken by Cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Bhopal. It was also announced that the cards will have a fixed a time limit for issuance and renewal of the document. The cards, currently in the name of male members, will be transferred to senior-most women in the families by a phased method.

They will be issued in the name of senior-most woman member in a family.
