Prince Harry Condemns Media Coverage of Girlfriend Meghan Markle
Prince Harry, on Tuesday, released a statement hitting out at the media for its treatment of his new girlfriend, American actress Meghan Markle. The statement says that Harry has never been comfortable with the media’s level of scrutiny on his life, but he has tried to develop a professional relationship with them, nevertheless.
The past week has crossed a line, the statement goes on to say. Reporters and photographers have tried to illegally enter her home, bribes have been offered to her ex-boyfriend, and reporting about her has been sexist and racist.
Prince Harry is worried about Markle’s safety says the statement and hopes that the media will take cognisance of his request.
Markle who plays a paralegal in the U.S. drama “Suits” has not responded. The media often alluded to her mixed-race heritage and have even spoken about some steamy scenes of her’s appearing on Pornhub. In fact these scenes were not pornography, but were taken from the TV show she acts in.
“He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game, He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his,” the statement says.
Both Prince William and Prince Harry have spoken about their distrust of the media, especially because their mother, Diana, died in a car accident, while being pursued by the paparazzi. Kate Middleton is almost always scrutinised for her looks and clothing, and on her India trip, even local papers focused on triviality such as Middleton’s ‘Marilyn moment.’
The media’s portrayal of women has often come under fire, with many prominent personalities world over speaking out against the sexism with which some stories are often imbued, from Hillary Clinton’s campaign to who is dating who. Let’s hope that as more people speak out, the media will take a step back before putting out sexist reportage.
