Pierce Brosnan Regrets Ad, Especially Because of Wife and Daughter
Pierce Brosnan regrets appearing in the Pan Bahaar ad, even more so because he lost his wife and his daughter to cancer. The James Bond star says he did not know that the product he was endorsing had cancer causing ingredients.
“I would never have entered into an agreement to promote a product in India that is dangerous to one’s health,” he said in a statement to People Magazine.
“Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women’s healthcare and research programmes that improve human health and alleviate suffering,” he said.
He added that he was told he would be advertising a breath freshener in his contract, and has asked the company to remove his image from all their advertising.
Both Brosnan’s wife and daughter, Cassie and Charlotte, passed away from Ovarian cancer, and the actor has been an active advocate for raising cancer awareness since then.
“To watch someone you love have his or her life eaten away bit by bit by this insidious disease, that kind of sorrow becomes an indeliable part of your psyche,” he said in a speech for a Stand up To Cancer event.
Twitter reacted negatively to his apology:
Many do not believe his claims that the company duped him by misrepresenting the product in his contract. However, his pain over his daughter and wife’s disease, and the fact that he is a staunch ambassador for women’s cancer research, makes it probable that he genuinely did not know about the harmful effects the product he was advertising had.
