Merchants have said they will not be accepting payments in notes of those denominations that now stand banned.

In a surprise move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced via a national televised address that the country is taking all existing 500 and 1,000 rupee notes out of circulation in a bid to tackle the massive issue of black money. With leaving no time for adjustments of any kind, he has hit the problem on the head. In his address he said this was an effort to get rid of counterfeit cash out of the financial system.
