New Update

Maia Ruth Lee surprised fashionistas by walking the ramp for designers Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta during the New York fashion week. The picture has gone viral on Instagram after Vogue Runway’s Nicole Phelps posted it.

"I've been going to fashion shows for 21 years and I've seen a pregnant model on the runway exactly one other time. Something to think about," Phelps wrote.

Maia, an artist, is due next month. She walked the ramp in a cardigan dress, with buttons opened, exposing her baby bump

Her runway picture on Instagram drew several comments.

"I am 38 weeks pregnant and it's wonderful to see myself represented on the runway," commented one person on the post.

"Among the many, many hard things about pregnancy is feeling ignored and marginalized by fashion and retail at a time when you have so many conflicting feelings about how your body is changing."

The casting director, Rachel Chandler, said that she herself had given birth 6 weeks ago, and that was just where her brain was at.

And of course Maia has gotten trolled big time. One user said, “Shouldn’t we be glad that pregnant models are taking some time off to care for themselves and the soon to be born little human they have to carry around 24/7, instead of working their ass of on a catwalk in uncomfortable clothes.”

Well it is really the model’s choice, isn’t it?

In India, too, we have seen models walk the ramp while pregnant. Model Carol Gracias walked the ramp showing off a baby bump in an effort to break gender stereotypes in the country. Actor Kareena Kapoor also graced the ramp while pregnant, looking ethereal in a Sabyasachi creation.

Kudos to these women who defy stereotypes and do not shy away from showing off their baby bumps!
