Batswoman Harmanpreet Kaur bowled us over by her epic 171 runs inning during ICC World Cup 2017. But there is more to the cricketer than her on-field performance. Did you know that she wears a no. 84 jersey during tournament for a special reason? While many may believe that it is for good luck or is her lucky number, the reasons run deeper. The cricketer who made sure India reached the finals with her incredible scoring wears a No.84 jersey as a tribute to the victims of the 1984 riots.

“I am very emotional when it comes to my roots. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots were very unfortunate. I did not lose any relative during the riots but innocent people were the victims. Whatever I have achieved so far is dedicated to my community and to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims”- Harmanpreet Kaur

The Punjab-born player’s mother, Sukhjeet Kaur explained the reason behind her jersey number before the tournament started off. In an interview with Indian Express, she said, “When she picked up her jersey, she chose the jersey number 84. For Punjabis, 84 brings back the memories of the 1984 riots. But she took it positively and now we also see it as a good sign for her. She dedicates all her victories to the victims of the riots.”

EMPOWER GIRLS

“Girls must be empowered and shouldn’t be killed in womb. The way my daughter made the country proud, other girls should also be encouraged.”

Earlier in an interview with HT, the cricketer herself opened up about her thoughts on the horrific historic incident. She had said, “I am very emotional when it comes to my roots. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots were very unfortunate. I did not lose any relative during the riots but innocent people were the victims. Whatever I have achieved so far is dedicated to my community and to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims.”

THE SIKH RIOTS

1984 riots were a political bloodbath directed against sikhs after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her security guard who was also a sikh himself. The pogrom resulted in 2,800 deaths across India including 2,100 deaths reported in the capital city itself.

Not just in international events like ICC World Cup, Kaur has also promoted and worn 84 no. jersey in domestic tournaments.

The Punjab-based player is being felicitated in her home state after her ground-breaking performance in the World Cup. Punjab CM Amrinder Singh just announced a cash prize of five lakh rupees and offered her a position of DSP in the Punjab Police. Even the India railways promoted her and Captain Mithali Raj to a gazetted post.
