The death of a three-year-old Indian-American girl, Sherin Mathews, has left the US city of Richardson in shock. Her foster father did not bother to wake up his wife, who is a nurse, when he saw the toddler struggling with a bottle of milk, and choking.
The girl had been missing since October 7. Now, two weeks after the investigation, the police confirmed Sherin as dead. The child had developmental issues and limited communication skills.
At first, Sherin's foster father Wesley Mathews told the police that she had gone missing. He said that she had sent her outside the house at 3 am on October 7 as punishment for not drinking her milk.
Wesley said he waited till sunrise to report the girl missing, and even did his laundry before then. He then changed his story and said that his daughter choked and he removed her body
Sherin's body was found in a culvert near the Mathews' home in Dallas. The father has been re-arrested and charged with first degree felony injury to a child. He was previously arrested on account of abandoning a child.
The Richardson community is coming together to protest the unfortunate death of this little girl. "All these lies, first punishing the girl and putting her under tree, later choking her in a garage at 3 AM for not drinking milk, does not add up. It is heartbreaking and shocking," said Diana, one of Richardson’s residents.
Many residents had been trying to look for the girl over the last two weeks.
The wife is not cooperating with the police. Her lawyer says that she is distraught. Sharon’s sister has been put in foster care after the incident, and the wife is trying to get back custody of her.
The couple had adopted Sherin from India last year.
