Asma Hamid To Be First Woman Advocate General In Pak's Punjab

Pakistan's Punjab government has decided to appoint Asma Hamid as the new Advocate General of the province, as per reports. On May 28, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif approved a summary regarding Hamid's appointment as advocate general. Hamid will be replacing Shakilur Rehman.

First woman to hold post

Hamid is an alumni of the prestigious Harvard University in the US. She holds a post-graduate degree in constitutional law from Harvard. In January 2014, she was elevated as an Assistant Advocate General. In 2015, she was appointed Additional Advocate General. Earlier, on two occasions, the brilliant advocate has also assumed responsibilities as Acting Advocate General in charge of the office.

As a Supreme Court advocate, Hamid successfully represented Punjab in several cases in the Lahore High Court and the apex court. Her representation of the state in the Distilleries case had won billions of rupees in tax revenue

Hamid is the daughter of former Punjab governor Shahid Hamid and niece of former federal law minister Zahid Hamid.

Worked on several crucial human rights cases

Last year, her proactive efforts to regulate the cement industry flourished when Punjab government banned further enlargement of the industry without permission from a cabinet committee. Hamid had also saved hundreds of acres of state land, especially in the ‘Province of Punjab vs Syed Ghazanfar Ali Shah’, when she won the case in the SC. In this case, she secured 117 acres of forest land in Sheikhupura from illegal occupants.

Hamid has assisted SC in several human rights cases, including the Zainab rape and murder case in Kasur. She also assisted in the silicosis prevention case.

Hamid has constantly advised the chief minister on various issues ranging from energy, property, environment, media, tax, and other laws. The authorities will be issuing her her appointment notification tonight.
