Despite Indian government's repeated efforts to educate and empower the girl child, a lot of girls are still unable to attend school due to societal biases. Yet again the family of an adolescent girl in Chennai reportedly locked her up in a room and abused her for expressing her desire of going to school.

She told the Child Welfare Committee that her father had deserted her mother as she was suffering from mental health issues. She had been living with her aunt and uncle for the last six months in Vallanchery, about 42km from Chennai. Three months ago, her life changed for the worse when her uncle asked her to discontinue her studies. He wanted her to assist him in looking after his cattle.

The girl, however, was determined to go to school. She continued her studies for a month without their knowledge. The school authorities had also offered her free education as she was a meritorious student.

Unfortunately, her aunt found out about the secret she had been trying to keep for so long. She thrashed the girl and locked her up in a room. A neighbour who felt something fishy approached the volunteers.

The volunteers intervened in time and sent the girl to a registered home in Guduvanchery, close to the school where she studied. CWC members assured that case would be registered against the girl's uncle and aunt.
It is because of some noble souls like Childline volunteers that restore our faith in humanity. We also appreciate the girl's willingness to seek education for the betterment of her life.
