Varnika Kundu Case: Accused sent to Judicial Custody till 25 Aug

Charged with attempt to stalking and abduction of a 29-year-old woman, Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala's son Vikas and his friend Ashish Kumar were sent to the judicial custody on Saturday. (12th August,2017). They will remain there till August 25.

Both were presented before the court of duty magistrate Gaurav Dutta amid tight police security.

Defence counsel Surya Prakash said: "both the youths have been sent to 14 days of judicial custody".

Both were sent to the police remand for two days till August 12.

The police arrested the duo following the complaint of the IAS officer's daughter but were released on bail as they had been booked under bailable sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act. They had arrested the duo again on August 10 after finding concrete evidence against the two.

People taking to the streets 

People organised a march called "Bekhauf Azaadi" in support of the victim. They also wanted to spread awareness on the pertinent issue of women's safety.

Other issues such as fair investigation in Varnika's case, no curfews timings for girls and working women hostels, making more female cops available at night, gender sensitization of Police officials, strict and concrete action against drunk driving were raised during the march.

The incident 

Last week, Varnika Kundu, the daughter of a senior IAS officer, complained that Vikas Barala, the son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar stalked her on the streets of Chandigarh. She was in her car, on her way back home.

Both the father and the daughter took to Facebook to speak about the matter. Varnika narrated the ordeal in detail, talking about how the stalking lasted for several minutes and how Vikas and Ashish tried to force her car to stop. She, however, remained determined to fight for her rights and get the accused put behind the bars.
