The lack of safety measures at the school has raised concerns about the well-being of students and the safety standards being implemented in elementary schools across the country and has sparked widespread outrage on Chinese social media platforms.

Locals reported the fire at Yingcai School at 11 pm, prompting swift action from rescuers. The flames were extinguished by 11:38 pm, but the aftermath revealed a devastating toll. While it remains unclear how many of the deceased were students, reports indicate one person was injured and receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Investigation and Detainment

Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the fire, and a significant development is the detention of the school owner, as reported by CCTV. Yingcai School, designed for elementary-grade students and equipped with an attached kindergarten, now stands as a scene under scrutiny.

The tragedy ignited a wave of outrage on Chinese social media platforms, with individuals expressing their anger and demanding accountability for any safety lapses. One statement on Weibo, according to news agency AFP, highlights the severity of the situation: "It's too scary, 13 children from 13 families, all gone in an instant... if there is no severe punishment, their souls will not rest in peace."

This incident also sheds light on the broader issue of safety standards in China, particularly in densely populated regions. Despite being one of the most densely populated countries, China has faced recurrent fire incidents and safety hazards, often attributed to a lack of stringent safety measures.

In November of the previous year, 26 lives were lost in a fire at a coal company in northern China's Shanxi province. Similarly, in July, 11 individuals perished when the roof of a school gym collapsed in the country's northeast.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and vigilant oversight in educational institutions across the nation.
