The anti-Romeo squad has been the topic of much discussion ever since UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath launched it to "protect the honour of women", with many choosing to call the squad "moral police" instead. BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi has now suggested that women constables be recruited in the team and they can thrash anyone on the road who tries to create problems for women on the streets.

Lekhi said that a woman’s basic fundamental right is compromised when she is asked not to walk on the streets and she faces problems while returning from schools and colleges. “There is a section of males who stop women from doing even the most basic of things. If you ask any girl, she will want to live life on her own terms without any unnecessary obstruction. So, anti-Romeo squad is for that. I feel women constables should be recruited in this squad, which should be named ‘Juliet squad’ and they should have full freedom to deal with men who resort to mischief,” she told ANI.

The anti-Romeo squad became functional last Wednesday. Director General of Police (DGP) Javed Ahmed said the squad aims to create an environment of safety on UP's roads.

Quashing counter-arguments against the anti-Romeo squad, Ahmed said, “Safety of girls or ladies is the sole intent of the anti-Romeo squads. No moral policing.”

Adityanath has reportedly told the state police to become completely intolerant towards crimes against women and bringing in steps to fix law and order in the state.
