Mantras for success in the changing work environment

In the rapidly changing technological environment, Work is no more a place or bound by (or restricted to) time. There is a rapid increase in small business ventures and competition, that now need us to fashion new ways to achieve success. Jaleh Bisharat, Marketing Director at oDesk, shares that businesses have spent $1 billion on hiring free lancers at her company alone. She further reveals the 7 mantras to achieve success in the future of work.

1. Have a personal brand

According to Bisharat, a woman should think how she wants to be perceived at a first meeting. The impression that you wish to leave on that person is your personal brand. Once you know your brand, should constantly promote it and deliver on it.

2.Focusing on the 20%

“Roughly 20% of the effort gets 80% of the result,” announces Bisharat. She advises women to constantly ask themselves if what they are focusing on is a part of that 20%.

3.Prioritizing people

After graduating from her business school, Bisharat was offered two jobs- one of which was in an established organization that paid well and the other one was a relatively new company that paid much less but employed innovative people. She chose the latter and believes that changed the course of her life.

4.Constant betterment

As the business scene changes every day, the marketing head advises women to constantly improve on their skills. She adds, “…successful people view education as a continuous, lifelong pursuit.”

5.Focus on Solutions and not problems

She narrates an incident from her office, where she needed to choose one out of three researchers for a big project. As a test she asked all three of them to compare some data. Facing a roadblock, two out of three, came up to Bisharat and reported the problem. The third one offered solutions to the problem. That, she believes is what should be done.

6.Look for talent outside

Bisharat suggests entrepreneurs to not limit themselves when trying to find employees. With an easy access through video calling etc, the geographical pool of finding the suitable candidates has expanded enormously.

7.Ensure high-performance

Managing a team that is scattered around the world requires good management skills.  She suggests that managers should be clear about deadlines and give proper feedback to employees.
