Kaur In Arjuna Award Race; But No Khel Ratna For Mithali Raj?

At a time when the 'Women In Blue' are being showered with laurels from all over the country, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recommended the names of Cheteshwar Pujara and Harmanpreet Kaur for the Arjuna Award. This raises questions as to why the BCCI has failed to push for Mithali Raj's name for the Khel Ratna. Mithali is the most successful captain of the women's cricket  team.

While gifts and prizes are pouring in for the Indian women’s cricket team for their incredible show in the recently concluded ICC Women's World Cup, the BCCI seems to have turned a blind eye to skipper Mithali Raj as they didn’t send her name of for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in time.

The 34-year-old player has proved her mettle each time India has gone to play a match and after 11-long years, she is finally due to win the ‘promised’ Rs 1 crore-land as reward.

Earlier too, the Indian skipper and 9 others from the team were presented with Rs 1.30 crore cash reward by Union minister, Suresh Prabhu. He has also promised promotions for Captain Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur in the Indian Railways where they are employed.

However, BCCI's tardy approach in pushing Mithali's name for the Khel Ratna is unfathomable.

Mithali has recently created history by becoming the first batswoman ever to score 6,000 ODI runs, helping India to the final of the World Cup. They fought valiantly but missed the match against England in the summit clash by a whisker.

According to reports, the deadline for sending Khel Ratna nominations was April 30, and the Indian board did not send her name till then.

Now, for a late recommendation, the board needs to ask for the intervention of sports minister Vijay Goel. Hope our players get the right acknowledgement they deserve.
