Cheer up fans, the most-liked doctor is all set to come back. BBC has finally confirmed its 13th Doctor as Jodie Whittaker. She will be the very first woman to essay the role of The Doctor in the shows 53 year-long history.
Since the current time traveller Peter Capaldi left the show, the speculation was rife that Whittaker would now take over his place.
There were many high-profile contenders for nation’s favourite Time Lord’s character like Olivia Colman, Kris Marshall, Tilda Swinton and Sherlock’s Andrew Scott.
The new Doctor seems more fierce than ever in the trailer broadcasted at the end of the Wimbledon Men's Singles Final. The teaser now confirmed the doctor’s return and excited fans are cheering on for #DoctorWho13 on social media.
In a special announcement on BBC One, Jodie Whittaker was announced as the new Doctor, who will replace Peter Capaldi this year. Capaldi’s role was a successful one since he took over the role in 2013 and now will leave in the forthcoming Christmas special.
Whittaker (35), is overjoyed by being a part of the series and said that the experience was "overwhelming, as a feminist" to become the next Doctor. "I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait," Whittaker was quoted by the BBC.
In the past, featuring a female Doctor was rumoured in the 1970s. Each time the lead announces as a woman, speculation widespread that a woman could not play the role. However, in the world of Doctor Who female Timelords - known as Time Ladies – are behind the lead for decades now and during the show’s classic era, Time Lady Romana paired with The Doctor.

And a female Doctor was all too much for lifelong fan Wendy Roberts who posted: "No disrespect to the actress chosen but the producers have brought my Dr Who history and memories to an abrupt end."
Si Stringer took a more nuanced view of the Facebook discussion posting simply: "People who accept a shape-shifting, time-travelling immortal character unable to accept female lead in a television show."
Whittaker would debut on the sci-fi show in the Christmas special towards the end of the year.
