June 10, 2014.  Sushma Swaraj became India's first woman External Affairs minister on May 16th this year. This however wasn’t the first time she entered a territory previously held exclusively ­by men. In October 1998 she became the first woman chief minister of Delhi. She has held key positions both as a member of the ruling party and as that of opposition.

 

As a young student, she was excellent at extracurricular activities. She won the best Hindi Speaker award at state-level competition and was declared the best cadet of N.C.C; both for three consecutive years .She has also won several awards of distinction in rhetoric contests, debates, recitations, dramas and other cultural activities. She was the President of Hindi Sahitya Sammelan of the State of Haryana for four years.

 

In 1977, at the age of 25, Sushma Swaraj became the youngest Cabinet Minister in India. Two years later, she became the Janata Party’s State President in Haryana. Along with becoming the first woman spokesperson of a national-level political party, she was the first woman Leader of Opposition and is now the first woman Union Cabinet Minister.

In 1996 during the thirteen-day government under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, she was inducted as the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting where she took the revolutionary step of live telecasting Lok Sabha debates.

 

She was also the first woman spokesperson for any political party in India and won the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award.
