Indian Women’s Team Wins Gold In World Carrom Championship

The seventh edition of World Carrom Championship saw the Indian women’s team face off with Sri Lanka in the finals held in Birmingham, UK. The Indian team, comprising S. Appoorwa, Parmila Devi, Kajol Kumari and Tuba Shehar, defeated Sri Lanka with a stellar score of 3-0 to win gold in the tournament.

S. Apoorwa and Kajol Kumari were the first ones to win gold followed by Parmila Devi and Tuba Shehar in the women's doubles event. Apoorwa and Kajol also pushed the Indian team into the finals where the entire team conquered Sri Lanka smoothly. This victory brought the second gold medal for Apoorwa, who had already clinched the first one in the women’s doubles title earlier this week.

However, the Indian men’s team struggled in the tournament and settled for silver against Sri Lanka in the 1-2 match in the finals. The Indian men’s team had Sandeep Deorukhkar and his partner Riyaz Akbar Ali, and Prashant More and RM Shankara.

This year, the World Carrom Championship was the biggest with 15 countries participating. Apart from India and Sri Lanka, countries like USA, Germany, Canada, France and Italy also competed. The championship takes place once in four years.
