"When I was born people sent my parents letters that sounded like condolence letters," says Intel India's chief Nivruti Rai. "From the time my mom told me about it, when I was 12, I have dreamt of being an engineer," she says of taking on men on their own turf. India's lopsided gender situation hasn't helped the rise of women, especially in fields that have been previously male dominated.

Nivruti Rai was speaking at the SheThePeople summit at Elevate 100 in Bengaluru. She is an advocate of gender diversity and champions the efforts of women. Intel India plans to invest 20 million dollars in women run businesses.

"My father was an engineer and my father's dream was that I be an engineer. So I wanted to be the best engineer India has ever produced."
