Haryana: Police to Depute Women Cops In Casuals To Curb Eve-Teasing
The recent surge in harassment cases against girls on their way to schools and colleges has finally compelled Haryana government to take a slew of measures to curb this menace.
According to the Haryana DGP, BS Sandhu, the police has devised a multi-pronged strategy to deal with the problem of eve-teasing. He assured girls’ safety by saying that they are going to involve Panchayats and other local representatives along with the local police.
The police will also launch a youth-oriented programme “Youth Against Sexual Harassment” wherein the police will train 5,000 to 10,000 volunteers in every district of the state.
The government has announced following four steps that it will take:
1. Installation of CCTVs at particular spots that make identification of habitual offenders easy, besides providing a psychological relief to the girls.
2. Putting up warning signs, warning signs for the offenders, which spell out the sections of the IPC and the charges under which they can be hauled up.
3. Putting up boards and hoardings providing information to women on whom to contact when facing the problem. These boards will have WhatsApp numbers and helpline numbers, besides Facebook and Twitter addresses of officials designated for the checking the menace.
4. The fourth step is to depute woman cops in plain clothes at the trouble spots.
Talking about how deputing women cops in plain clothes will avert the crimes, Mr Sandhu said,
“This acts as a big deterrent and sends a strong signal when an eve-teaser is caught by a police personnel at a public spot. Our aim is to sanitise these trouble spots of this menace.”
Besides these four measures, the police will also launch a youth-oriented programme with the name Youth Against Sexual Harassment wherein the police will train 5,000 to 10,000 volunteers in every district of the state. They will also sensitise the masses against sexual harassment.
Such measures will definitely help girls to seek education without the thought of being harassed or molested lurking in their minds.
