For the first time: A Guard of Honour for Mehbooba Mufti by Women officers

Close on the heels of the CRPF making history by placing over 560 women commandos of the 232 Mahila Battalion on the frontlines to battle Maoists, for the first time in history women police officers in Jammu and Kashmir offered a guard of honour to the first woman Chief Minister of the state Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar.

The occasion was a function organised as part of the bi-annual 'Darbar Move' practice, under which the state government functions six months each from the two capitals of the state, Jammu city and Srinagar. In November, the capital will again shift to Jammu.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti arrived at the Civil Secretariat building in Srinagar, escorted by director general of police K Rajendra. inspected the ceremonial parade and received the Guard of Honour by a contingent of J&K Police in the presence of other ministers and top civil servants. There were 30 women and 60 men, and the guard of honour was led by a policewoman, Sandeep Kour, a deputy superintendent of police. “It was done for the representation of women in the police force and I am proud that we have here, for the first time, a woman chief minister,” Kour told Hindustan Times.

It was no doubt a great day for the women officers present, a ceremony they will hope to repeat again as well.
