Buckley essays the character of a recently widowed woman called Harper who goes on a solo vacation in the English countryside to take her mind off a recent tragedy—her husband’s death. The inn she decides to lodge at is surrounded by woods, apple trees; it is beautiful in a primal way and is something out of the Bible.

The ">trailer begins on a rather quaint and cosy note. But the feeling does not last long as the trailer gets progressively unsettling beginning with an uncomfortable joke by the property owner Geoffrey (Kinnear) Harper is lodging at. His invasive questions and humorous warning about the “forbidden fruit” which is disturbing for not only Harper but the viewers as well.

The trailer since that scene descends into being a psychological thriller with Harper complaining of a weird feeling about someone watching her and feeling strange emotions about her husband’s death with different men making snarky remarks driving her to the brink of insanity.

The visuals go back and forth between Harper’s experiences and her being dismissed by the men around her. The visuals transfix viewers putting them into a daze and leaving a creepy feeling lingering till the end.

Garland in 2020 had described Men as a “low-budget horror movie”. He also revealed that the film’s idea came from another project he was a part of, a TV series about the lack of effective social protests in recent times. The filmmaker said that the wave of Black Lives Matter protests which took place on a global scale after the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis in May 2020, changed his mind over the subject matter for the original series.

The Garland film Men is all set to be released in theatres on May 20, 2022.
