Muskan, Wastepicker’s Daughter Secured 74% In Class X Examination
The results of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) class 10 has given umpteen families reasons to cheer. But the success story of Muskan Rahim is sure to warm the cockles of your heart. This daughter of a waste-picker, Rahim Shabir Shaikh from a slum near Yerwada, Pune, earns a daily wage of Rs 400, has secured 74% in her class 10 exams.
Nurturing the dream of pursuing language studies and taking up teaching as a profession, Muskan never felt her parents’ financial condition as a constraint. She acknowledges the significant role her parents played in encouraging her dream of securing a bright professional career.
“I love studying. But when I’m not, I either cook or play with my brother and sisters,” said Muskan. She will be opting for Humanities in class XI.

“Education is the only thing that can uplift them and the future generations. No matter what people say, I will always try my best to educate them,” said Shayera, Muskan’s mother, bubbling with pride. She further added that her (Muskan’s) father is not educated, but she wants her children to study further. They will support Muskan and help her achieve her dreams.
Shayera clearly mentions that they aren’t one of those families who will force their daughters to get married just because they have reached a particular age.
Laying emphasis on the importance of getting the daughters educated, she says, “My son is interested in sports, while my daughters want to pursue higher education. While many choose to educate their sons over their daughters, I do not agree with this mentality. All are the same for me. I use my daughter Muskan as an example for my son and ask him to aspire more like his sister.”
Despite grappling with financial and social problems, it is good to see that young girls like Muskan are determined to carve out their own destiny while elevating the status of their family at the same time.
