“I am afraid to have a daughter”, says Divyanka Tripathi
Recently, the TV actor Divyanka Tripathi of “Yeh Hai Mohabbatein” fame, took to twitter and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for stricter laws against rapists.
The rape of a 12-year-old girl in Chandigarh who was returning home after attending the Independence Day Celebrations in her school had greatly disturbed her. The girl who studies in Class 8 was allegedly raped by an unknown man, armed with a knife, on Tuesday. She also invoked PM Modi’s Swacchh Bharat campaign and asked him to rid India of the ‘filth of rapists’.
Divyanka Tripathi has been part of popular shows like ‘Banoo Main Teri Dulhann’ and ‘Chintu Chinki Aur Ek Badi Si Love Story’ currently stars in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.
She spoke about her own fears of having a baby girl and said,
“I never prayed for a son, but now I’m afraid to have a daughter. What will I tell her? Why did I bring her into a living hell?”
She also asked all political parties to wake up and work towards ensuring security for women. Questioning the idea of independence, she also said that so many years of independence couldn’t set us free of these social evils.
Moreover, it is sad to note that after 70 years of independence, crime against women and girls continue to be commonplace. Further, this forces us to question whether women in India have the freedom which the martyrs of this country won 70 years ago from the Britishers? Or are we still bound by patriarchal mindsets that perceive women to be mere objects? Do women really feel secure?
Finally, we need more women like Divyanka Tripathi, who can use their popularity and make the voices of the underdogs heard.
