Delhi: Woman with Short-Term Memory Loss Raped By an Off-Duty Uber Cab Driver

Yet again, in the National Capital, a 38-year-old female has been allegedly raped by a man on the pretext of providing employment. The woman is reportedly suffering from short-term memory loss.

The man has been charged with kidnapping, rape and unnatural sex, the Delhi Police said. The accused, Kamal, is a 45-year-old father of four who works as a cab driver with ride-sharing app Uber. He was arrested from Shahdara on Friday.

The Police reported that it faced difficulty during the identification process because the women could not provide exact details  because of her medical condition. After searching for 2-3 hours in the NCR area, she identified the board at a residential society's entrance near the Hindon River in Ghaziabad and pegged the house where she was allegedly raped and also described its interior.

She told the police that on 6 July, Thursday, she had visited the Karkardooma Court in connection with her divorce case. She met this man while she was standing near the gate number 4 of the court after finishing her work and told him that she is unemployed and that if he could help her.

"Kumar told her he might have some work for her, but has to ask his wife first. He then took her to his residence where he raped her, committed unnatural sex and brutally beat her. He then dropped her near the Karkardooma Court," Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Yadav said.

The Police were later informed by the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital authorities in Kalyanpuri that a woman, who has been allegedly sexually assaulted, has been admitted there.

The police registered a case against this unidentified man after medical examination confirmed rape.

The Police have found out that the cab was not hired by the woman at the time of the incident. The woman is currently undergoing counselling.

The case has once again reignited the debate on women’s safety in New Delhi, which is notorious for being the rape capital of the country. The rape charge could further tarnish the Uber’s image in India, even though the cabbie was off duty. Uber Technologies Inc is currently facing a tough time and a lot of criticism regarding its lack of action against those who complained of sexual harassment at workplace. The web-based taxi service has earlier been blacklisted in New Delhi in 2014 following the rape of a woman passenger by an on-duty driver.
