Ragini Dubey, the victim, was cycling to school when the four men started chasing her on two motorbikes. They grabbed her, pushed her to the ground and slit her throat with a knife and fled. One of the accused is the 22-year-old son of the village head. The police have arrested him, but the remaining three are still at large.

"There is a hand-pump outside my house. They used to come and sit there and pass lewd remarks against my daughter. We should have reported to the police," - Victim's Mother

"The girl's throat had been slit with a sharp weapon. We will make arrests very soon in the case," said Vijay Pal Singh, a senior police officer of the district.

The victim's family is shattered by their daughter's death. They said that they had been stalking and harassing her for more than six months.

According to a report by HT, she had told her parents about the harassment, but they did not approach the police fearing social stigma attached to such complaints.

The family had even tried to complain to the village head about the harassment. He had mollified them saying that it would stop.

But the situation had become so serious that the teen had even stopped going to school. However, she decided to attend classes after she could no longer afford to miss school.

The incident is a sad reminder to all of us that women's safety in India will always be in jeopardy until there is a paradigm shift in people's mindset on how women are perceived.
